We’re starting the year with an exciting new chapter — the DELFISHPAM project.
In collaboration with leading research institutions, this project brings together science, conservation, and real-world data to better understand bottlenose dolphins in Maltese waters.
This project is carried out in partnership with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Sapienza University of Rome, and the Italian National Research Council.
Together, the goal is clear: to bridge the gap between scientific research and public awareness — while improving how we protect marine life.
The focus of the project is the bottlenose dolphin, one of the most commonly observed species around Malta.
Bottlenose dolphins are highly intelligent and social animals, often seen around the Maltese archipelago throughout the year.
However, increasing human activity at sea means that every interaction matters.
This project aims to better understand how dolphins interact with activities such as fisheries and aquaculture.
Over the next 18 months, researchers will use innovative monitoring techniques to collect data on dolphin presence, movement, and behaviour.
This includes the use of underwater acoustic devices to detect dolphin activity in key areas.
Collaboration with local aquaculture operators is essential — providing access to sites, practical knowledge, and support in maintaining research equipment.
DELFISHPAM is about more than research — it’s about creating a better understanding between human activity and marine life.
By combining science with real-world data, the project will help inform policymakers and support sustainable decision-making.
Ultimately, it will provide valuable insights into dolphin populations — including their distribution, abundance, and habitat use.
This project represents an important step toward protecting dolphins in Maltese waters.
